Chelsea Football Stadium
A football stadium in London by Herzog & de Meuron, where adjustments to architectural elements ripple across massing and urban design, studied in 2017
Chelsea Football Stadium reimagines the Chelsea Football Club’s Stamford Bridge sports arena, taking into account the existing, dense urban context. The stadium is a parametric machine balancing the technical and quantitative programmatic requirements with the experience of an individual spectator. From the building perimeter to the proximity to players, no consideration is isolated. A slight thickening of balustrades to improve safety restructures the entire bowl geometry and eye line views to the pitch, extending to larger urban interventions. This work reflects parametric and detail studies of the seat layout and structural coordination, as well as how material and lighting conditions meet at complex intersections.
