In Between

A model of a speculative building proposal, where an entrance belongs to both and neither building, completed in 2016

In Between is a building proposal located in the Japanese suburban landscape of Hibarigaoka, outside of Kashiwa City. The design implements techniques researched in a catalog of thresholds across a multi-story building, which is formed by two hinged volumes. Architectural elements distort the reading of boundaries and references in everyday programs: an auto shop, ramen stand, living units, flower shop, calligraphy school, quick mart, patisserie, dental clinic, barber shop and Italian cafe. The building’s entrance, positioned along its single shared edge, belongs to both and neither building. A consistent language of apertures with varying depths and material enclosures produce a homogeneity that unravels upon closer observation.
